Frequently Asked Questions
1How does an online bike fit work?
Our online bike fit process is designed to mirror the process used by professional fitters around the world. If you've had a bike fit before it should feel quite familiar, and if it's your first time rest assured it has been tried and tested. The main difference is that instead of a human giving you recommendations, our software will analyse your riding position and provide the information and recommendations you need.
Your online bike fit will follow an iterative process where you film yourself riding on your trainer, upload the video, review the results, make the recommended adjustments, then repeat. It’s important to remember your first set of recommendations are unlikely to be your last and this can often requires several rounds of adjustments.
If you’d like to learn more about the process (and you should) we have a full blog post
that goes into much more detail.
2Why do I need a bike fit?
In the simplest terms, everyone's body is different in its shape and the way it moves. If you want to get the most out of your bike, it should be adjusted to your needs.
3Who should get a bike fit?
Basically everyone. If something is uncomfortable on the bike you are obviously in need of a fit and even if you aren’t uncomfortable a lot of the injuries that can pop up on a bike are repetitive use injuries. On a bike you are pedaling at up to 100rpm for potentially hours on end. That can mean tens of thousands of repetitions. Even if nothing is bothering you now it doesn’t mean there are underlying issues that can lead to injuries in the long term.
4What’s the difference between sizing and fitting a bike?
We like to say the best way to think about this is like buying a nice suit. The first step is to pick the right size, one that’s as close to your body proportions as possible. Then comes the tailoring. Even when you pick the right size, you likely need to get the trousers, skirt, or jacket tailored to make sure they are exactly the right length and ensure the suit fits just right to your body.
It’s mostly the same with bikes. Getting the right size of bike makes sure you’re starting in the right place. Fitting a bike is making sure that your bike is adjusted to meet your unique body and needs. Unlike a suit, a properly fitting bike won’t just make you look better, it will make sure you’re more comfortable, avoid injury, and even improve performance.
5Have you just replaced professional bike fitters with a computer?
In short, no. Having completed thousands of professional bike fits ourselves, we understand the value and nuance that a professional bike fitter can bring. They still serve a very important role for many people that have specific needs such as injury, disability, or peak performance. However, the majority of people may not need the personal touch that an in person bike fit provides. They just need the tools and information to get their bike into a great position for them, which is what we do.
6I'm a bike fitter, can I use your product in my studio?
Absolutely! We offer a range of business plans to suit every every size of fit studio. You can even change you plan month to month based on how many fits you think you'll need. Check them out here.
7What do I need to use your service?
You need three basic things to use MyVeloFit:
- A bike
- A stationary bike trainer (or bike rollers)
- Any camera or phone that takes video
8Can you fit any type of bike?
Right now we can fit the following types of bike:
- Road
- Hybrid
- Mountain Bike
- Triathlon/TT
9Can you fit my Peloton or spin bike?
Absolutely! The way our program works is based almost entirely on your body. So as long as you're on a bike-like object, we can help you get more comfortable and even more powerful.
In developing our spin bike profile we analyzed the positions of some of the top instructors from New York City and paired it with what we know about human movement and biomechanics to develop a sustainable and powerful position.
10What will my results look like?
Through our three step process MyVeloFit will develop a custom profile for you that outlines your overall mobility as well as your current position on the bike. Using these two sets of information we provide four sets of recommendations to improve your fit:
- Saddle height
- Saddle fore/aft
- Handlebar Reach
- Handlebar Stack
11What if I’m not happy with my fit?
We’re here to help. Bike fitting isn’t a perfect science and we want to make sure you get the best results possible. We’ve integrated many points in our service where you can let us know if you think something has gone wrong. We also give you the option to have one of our professional fitters personally review your profile through our Personal Review service. Finally, if you really don’t feel like we’ve helped you get a better position on your bike, we offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee.
12I made the recommended adjustments and it’s still asking me to make more, what gives?
This is normal. Our process is iterative, so it will recommend small(er) changes, get you to take a new video to see how they affected your position, then make updated recommendations based on the new position. This process repeats until you are within the acceptable range for all the key joint angles based on your mobility. The reason we use small changes rather than larger ones is because your body will take time to adapt to each change. Three changes of 10mm will be much easier for your body to adjust to than one change of 30mm. Perhaps most importantly, big changes will often result in your body doing odd things to compensate for the change. Making small changes helps reduce these compensations, but significant adjustments will just require time riding in the new position for your body to adapt. If you've made a few changes in one session and things start to feel strange we recommend you take a break from adjusting and ride in that position for a few days. Sometimes it's best to let yourself adapt a bit before making any more adjustments.
13The recommendations I’m being given are different then what I’ve received in previous bike fits. Am I crazy, or are you crazy?
Bike fitting, like many areas of study, is subject to different schools of thought or philosophies. While the scientific knowledge around biomechanics, performance and injury prevention is improving all the time, how they apply to your position on the bike is still a relatively young area of study. Based on over a decade of our own data driven professional fitting experience and study, we are confident that our recommendations are based on the most up to date knowledge on bike fit and relevant research.
Compared to more “traditional” schools of thought, you are likely to find our recommendations generally differ in the following ways:
- Lower saddle height
- Shorter grip reach
- Taller grip height (stack)
14I have no more recommended changes, have I found the perfect position?
Maybe. What you have found is what we call a sound position. If there are no more recommendations, this position should be one that is comfortable and injury free for you. The way our service works is to get you within the recommended range on all of the key joint angle measurements, but it is up to you to explore what feels best within that range.
For example, based on your mobility score your recommended knee extension range may be 35˚- 43˚. If your starting saddle position is too high, perhaps your knee angle measures 31˚. Our process will recommend small reductions in saddle height until your knee angle hits 35˚. Once you’ve hit 35˚ we will not make any further recommendations for saddle height, as you are now within the acceptable range for that joint angle based on your mobility. This is a sound position for you. However, there is still another 8˚ worth of saddle height adjustment that you could consider while still being within that acceptable range (35˚- 43˚). This area is up to you to explore to find the best position for you, which may even change across a season as your body adapts and adjusts
15Why do the bike manufacturer specifications not match the ones you provide?
We do our best to provide accurate and up to date information on all the bikes we list in our sizing database. However, manufacturers often change specifications without notice and we aren’t always able to immediately catch all changes they publish. Typically any differences and discrepancies are minor and we seek to resolve them as quickly as possible. We recommend always consulting the manufacturer to ensure accurate specifications when related to fit or otherwise. If you receive updated specifications for fit related components we recommend inputting the updated values in our Compare tool to more accurately assess the fit of a bike.
16The size recommendation recommends a different saddle height/spacers for my bike than what I use.
The initial settings is not meant to replace a bike fitting, but can be used to configure the bike for a test ride, or as the starting position before a bike fitting. It is likely that both will need minor adjustments which can be guided through our bike fitting tool
