New Bike Day: How To Dial In Your Fit

New bike day is just as exciting for us here at MyVeloFit as for anyone else. I thought as a way to celebrate my new bike day I’d bring you along the journey of dialing in my position on my Trek Checkpoint SL 5. I can already hear some of you asking “surely if you run a bike fit company you already know your setup?” Well, kind of. If I had wanted to just replicate my position from my previous bike, we’ve written up a great method for doing so. But I wanted to take this opportunity to start from scratch. I’ve opted to test out a slightly more upright position that I have in the past (more on this in future posts). So I threw my previous fit measurements out the window (not literally of course) and started fresh […]

The Importance Of Mobility For Cyclists

Most cyclists want to be faster and stronger, but there is no one-size-fits-all way to get there. The general rule is to ride more, and ride smarter. Training plans can help you look at every aspect of your riding, and get you tackling those goals in a realistic way. However, time on the bike is not the whole picture of what it takes. Mobility for cyclists is crucial. Maintaining a healthy range of motion through stretching and strength training needs to be a key aspect of that plan. And no, we don’t mean doing a couple quad stretches before hopping on the bike–there’s more to it than that.   Does Stretching Make You Faster? The cumulative effects of stretching (when done right) add up and in turn, can make you a faster and stronger cyclist. Here’s how:   Improved Flexibility […]

Best Ways to Adjust Reach on your Bike

Shortening or lengthening the reach on your bike, especially those with drop bars, is one of the most important adjustments that impacts your position. Too much or too little reach can not only lead to an uncomfortable ride and impact handling, but contribute to a number of issues including pain in the low and mid back, shoulders, neck, hands, and wrists. In this article we’ll cover some of the best ways to adjust reach on your bike, each with their own pros, cons and usefulness in different situations. Stem Length Stem Angle Handlebar Reach Hood position Saddle fore/aft Saddle height Curious if your riding position might benefit from a reach adjustment? Try our free fit check .   What is Reach? Before we get started, you may have heard the word reach get thrown around a lot in cycling circles. […]

Bicycle Geometry 101: Fit Geometry

The geometry of a bicycle is a combination of key measurements that describe the general shape and size of a bicycle. Though there are some measures that are more or less useful depending on the type of bicycle, there is generally a consistent set of measurements that can be found in the Bicycle geometry chart of most bicycle manufacturers and are often referred to when discussing both the fit and handling of bicycles. As each measurement has a different impact for the rider, we’ve separated the key measurements into two main categories: Bike Fit Geometry Bike Handling Geometry   Bike Fit Geometry These aspects of a bicycle primarily impact how the bicycle will fit the rider and are the main contributors to determine the right bike size for a rider.   Bike Handling Geometry These aspects of a bicycle primarily […]

Body By Bike

I’m all about sharing the gospel of cycling and exploring the outdoors on two wheels, and I firmly believe that movement is medicine and there’s nothing more exhilarating than the wind through my hair, dust spraying from my wheels and the sensation of flying through space. Riding bikes is fun!  But the dirty little secret that no one talks about is that zipping around on two wheels can make a body hurt, even if you never crash. I’m not talking about the good kind of pain like your lungs searing and legs screaming as you roll over the top of a mountain pass. We like that kind of pain! No, I’m talking about the kind of pain like numb hands, a sore butt, stiff neck, aching back, and knee pain. This is the bad kind of hurt that should never […]

Saddle Tilt 101

Your bike’s saddle position is the foundation for the rest of your fit. While getting the height and fore-aft positioning of the saddle ensures your overall position is off to the right start, the tilt of your saddle can often have the biggest impact on comfort if not set correctly. Many cyclists incorrectly start shopping for new saddles to improve comfort when saddle positioning can often alleviate issues.  This post will outline our recommended process for setting up your saddle tilt, to make sure you’re getting the most out of your fit.   What is Saddle Tilt? Saddle tilt refers to how level (or not) your saddle is front to back. Tilt is typically referred to in degrees with positive measurements indicating a “nose up” position and negative degrees indicating a “nose down” position. While every seatpost will have a […]

New Bike Fit Ranges

We are excited to launch some small but meaningful changes to our system for how it measures riders and recommends changes to their position. In short, we’ve adapted our bike fit ranges to better accommodate more riders, particularly those at either end of the performance/comfort spectrum.  Let’s dive into the specifics of the changes!   Joint Angle Ranges The recommended ranges applied during our on-bike analysis are uniquely tailored to the bike type, fit goals and individual mobility of each rider we fit.  These ranges have been established based on industry best practice ranges in bike fitting, and ones that we have been using as part of professional fits for years. They are calibrated to reflect internal research and testing on how our computer vision tools measure cyclists in comparison to other industry technologies such as high speed video capture, […]

The Saddle Height Myth

One of the most pervasive issues for cyclists everywhere is the prevalence of excessive seat (saddle) height. In other words, your saddle is probably too high.  Having a tall saddle is a trend that has been around for what seems like time immortal and likely the result of a number of factors. We can all recognize that little voice in the back of our heads that says “just put it up a little more”. Maybe it was getting that pro looking saddle to bar drop, or some Italian bike fitting folk lore, or it could just be some well intentioned fit advice from friends run amuck, however we got here, excessive saddle height typically causes far more issues than it purports to solve.  In this article we’re going to break saddle height down into a few parts to help dispel […]

Handlebar and Hood Positioning 101

Hood positioning on drop-bar bikes (e.g., road, gravel, touring) is often overlooked but crucial for a great riding position. Many riders spend significant time adjusting their cleat position, saddle height, and stem length but neglect their handlebar rotation and hood position. Typically, the stock hood position on a new bike is not optimised, or even thought about. By simply adjusting the hood position, you can change the overall reach by nearly 20mm, equivalent to switching from a 100mm to an 80mm stem. This adjustment significantly affects your posture through the shoulders and neck. Poor hood positioning can lead to hand and wrist issues, such as cyclist’s palsy, a numbness in the fingers that can persist after riding and, if untreated, cause permanent damage.   Understanding Hood Positioning The first thing to consider is that proper hood positioning is largely dependent […]
