Feet Before Fit

There’s an old saying that goes something along the lines of “invest in the things that come between you and the ground”, and when thinking about bike fit it’s safe to assume this is investing in the things that come between you and the bike. While the first item that may come to mind is your saddle (and you wouldn’t be wrong), the more overlooked element in this system is your feet, and what you put on them. We like to call this concept “Feet before fit”. We’ve discussed the importance of proper saddle positioning and its role as the foundation of your entire position. However, addressing the interface between you and the bike at your feet is a close second when considering injury prevention and avoiding common pains. Unlike most other activities, cycling involves extremely high volumes of very […]

Saddle Tilt 101

Your bike’s saddle position is the foundation for the rest of your fit. While getting the height and fore-aft positioning of the saddle ensures your overall position is off to the right start, the tilt of your saddle can often have the biggest impact on comfort if not set correctly. Many cyclists incorrectly start shopping for new saddles to improve comfort when saddle positioning can often alleviate issues.  This post will outline our recommended process for setting up your saddle tilt, to make sure you’re getting the most out of your fit.   What is Saddle Tilt? Saddle tilt refers to how level (or not) your saddle is front to back. Tilt is typically referred to in degrees with positive measurements indicating a “nose up” position and negative degrees indicating a “nose down” position. While every seatpost will have a […]

New Bike Fit Ranges

We are excited to launch some small but meaningful changes to our system for how it measures riders and recommends changes to their position. In short, we’ve adapted our bike fit ranges to better accommodate more riders, particularly those at either end of the performance/comfort spectrum.  Let’s dive into the specifics of the changes!   Joint Angle Ranges The recommended ranges applied during our on-bike analysis are uniquely tailored to the bike type, fit goals and individual mobility of each rider we fit.  These ranges have been established based on industry best practice ranges in bike fitting, and ones that we have been using as part of professional fits for years. They are calibrated to reflect internal research and testing on how our computer vision tools measure cyclists in comparison to other industry technologies such as high speed video capture, […]

The Saddle Height Myth

One of the most pervasive issues for cyclists everywhere is the prevalence of excessive seat (saddle) height. In other words, your saddle is probably too high.  Having a tall saddle is a trend that has been around for what seems like time immortal and likely the result of a number of factors. We can all recognize that little voice in the back of our heads that says “just put it up a little more”. Maybe it was getting that pro looking saddle to bar drop, or some Italian bike fitting folk lore, or it could just be some well intentioned fit advice from friends run amuck, however we got here, excessive saddle height typically causes far more issues than it purports to solve.  In this article we’re going to break saddle height down into a few parts to help dispel […]

MyVeloFit Secures Seed Funding And Expands Executive Team

What is MyVeloFit? OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 30, 2021  — MyVeloFit delivers a mobile-based AI video analysis tool that helps cyclists adjust their bike to improve comfort, performance and reduce injury. Their emergence in the market comes at a time when both indoor and outdoor cycling are experiencing unprecedented booms, alongside a shift to direct-to-consumer bike sales. The company plans to use this funding round to scale up its operations and allow them to expand their service offering and move more boldly in the North American and international markets.  An avid cyclist himself, Mr. Fauser saw the gap in the market to bring bike fitting to a wider audience: “I’ve experienced great benefits from having my bikes fit, but the industry has been slow to move on providing an accessible and scalable option for the growing number of riders. MyVeloFit is […]

Handlebar and Hood Positioning 101

Hood positioning on drop-bar bikes (e.g., road, gravel, touring) is often overlooked but crucial for a great riding position. Many riders spend significant time adjusting their cleat position, saddle height, and stem length but neglect their handlebar rotation and hood position. Typically, the stock hood position on a new bike is not optimised, or even thought about. By simply adjusting the hood position, you can change the overall reach by nearly 20mm, equivalent to switching from a 100mm to an 80mm stem. This adjustment significantly affects your posture through the shoulders and neck. Poor hood positioning can lead to hand and wrist issues, such as cyclist’s palsy, a numbness in the fingers that can persist after riding and, if untreated, cause permanent damage.   Understanding Hood Positioning The first thing to consider is that proper hood positioning is largely dependent […]

Cycling Cleat Positioning 101

Though the cleat positioning on your shoes may seem trivial, it often goes one of two ways: never noticing them again or pain. To try and make sure you fall firmly outside the pain crowd, we’re going to give you a comprehensive guide you can follow to optimize your cycling cleat positioning. In this article, we’ll cover the three key elements of how to position your cleats. Fore-aft position Lateral position Rotation DISCLAIMER: Cleat positioning can be quite involved depending on the individual. Riders with significant leg length discrepancies, pronation/supination of the feet, or other lower limb alignment challenges will often benefit from the careful assessment of a professional bike fitter. You may be aware of shimming and wedging of cleats to deal with these issues, and while they can be powerful tools in bike fit, we generally find they are […]

Performance And Bike Fit

Improving performance is one of many reasons to get a bike fit and can play an important role in getting the most out of your training. While the idea that minor bike adjustments can instantly increase power output is largely misguided, there are a number of ways that having a good position on the bike can improve performance. This post will go over the following six ways in which bike fit impacts performance: Injury Prevention  Comfort  Power & Muscle Recruitment  Aerodynamics  Handling  Training and Fit    Injury Prevention It goes without saying that being injured is detrimental to your performance. Whether the result of a crash, physical strain, or otherwise, being injured will almost certainly prevent you from training and performing at your best. Perhaps the best reason to focus on your fit, is to avoid unnecessary injuries that come […]
